Background

The Welland Gliding Club is located at the North East end of Northamptonshire, midway between the sleepy market town of Oundle and the industrial town of Corby. The airfield is neighbour to the National Trust Property of Lyveden New Bield. It is surrounded by beautiful gently rolling countryside, ideal for thermal soaring.

We have a recent, purpose built clubhouse situated at the west entrance, with club gliders being stored in a large hanger situated in a natural sheltered hollow.

Welland is a small friendly club with a large cross section of experience levels.

Opening

The club operates on the following days:

Saturday - Sunday - Wednesday (during the summer) - Bank Holidays - Flying weeks (1 or 2 per year)

Operation

The club has a single grass runway  1200 metres long - 255º/075º on which we operate two launch mechanisms. Principally via winch from our powerful twin cable system and additionally via aerotow using a privately owned Wilga.  Winch launches typically provide between 1000 and 1500 feet, aerotows provide height as required. We are lucky to be outside restricted air space in the immediate vicinity.
